For avid off the grid camping and hiking lovers, this place is a true hidden oasis. Would only recommend for those coming with their own vehicles, as it is too far and remote from services to walk on foot. It doesn’t get more beautiful than this view in the middle of the rainforest. We saw a family of caotis who visited the treehouse area daily, plus bats, butterflies, caterpillars and Pygmy squirrels. Lots of on site trails to discover, and opportunities for self-reflection, reading and quality time with your companions. Bring your hiking boots for the trails and rainboots for the river, as well as your wildnerness survival and travel smarts! Loved reading Fiona’s Cost Rican mammal pocket book to help identify some of the creatures we encountered during our stay.
This is a wild place! You are truly by yourself in the middle of the jungle. Off the grid, with no cell signal or wifi to look up what might have biten you that is making your skin break out and itch. So just prepare accordingly. The treehouse is very cute and well designed, with a view that can’t be beat! The kitchen was well stocked with everything you need to prepare and cook food, and I was delighted to see there was also a way to make coffee! We were also pleased to have warm showers which is something I had not experienced anywhere else in Costa Rica.
Be prepared to hike 15 minutes with your stuff to get the treehouse. It is a beautiful hike, with a river crossing that was easy, but just took us by surprise. There were also some bats residing in the outdoor living room. So if that freaks you out, I would plan to stay somewhere else.
This treehouse is an absolute dream. I was searching to get off the beaten track on my trip to Costa Rica, and I succeeded at Fiona’s perfectly designed treehouse. It has the coolest bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, loft and outdoor balconies! Extremely peaceful, beautiful, wonderful place to truly get away from it all. My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon as a last stop after 3.5 weeks in CR, and this was seriously the best shower I’d taken! This place is for the special type of human with an adventurous spirit and a love of nature. If that’s you, put this on your list.
We’ve already recommended the treehouse to friends! It was a beautiful time
Incredibly beautiful location and a lovely place to stay. A lot of privacy and well equipped for all the comfort you wouldn’t expect in the middle of a forest. Costa Rica at its best!
It was an amazing experience for us to spend 2 nights there. The lodge is beautifully built and offered everything we needed like fridge, well equipped kitchen with gas stove, pots and pans, bathroom with shower. Especially loved to lie in a hammock at the terrace listening to the sounds of the jungle.
Reading the given instructions carefully is a good advice – the trail to the lodge is a real trail, so pack light 🙂 And keep in mind you have to bring all the food and stuff you need for cooking etc. Would definitely recommend the place and would come again.
On our recent trip we booked a night in the tree house for my husband’s 40th birthday. hoping to make it amazing. We drove 5 and a half hours to get there. We had no cell or wifi service so Fiona was nice enough to give us a restaurant about 35 min away to use to let them know we were on our way. We let them know what time we would be there and they said the person meeting us would meet us in the parking area for the community. We were told to have a 4×4 vehicle and we did. On the way up the mountain on the horrible road filled with boulders and washed away areas we got stuck, for over an hour. No one came looking for us at all. my husband climbed for 45 min and found a house and they said over a 30 min more walk, up the mountain. He came back to the car. We finally got un stuck and headed back down because up was not an option. No one down the road allowed us wifi so we drove 35 min away back to the restaurant. I explained what happened and how we could not get up the mountain. We then got a call from someone in California becausethe people I was communicating with did not speak English. He explained we should park at the store and have their taxi service drive us up. So we drove 35 min back. Still no English, by the time we finished explaining what we needed it was pouring rain and close to dark. We got up there after a 25 min drive through washed away roads and through one of the worst roads I have ever been on and the worst part is we had to pay $40.00 for this taxi service. We get there, after they knew we were coming, and they locked the gates. We beeped and nothing. The taxi took us back down. We were left in the middle of know where with no cell service. Then they continued to say it was our fault and they waited all day for us when all we did was follow their instructions. We never got to stay and had to drive another two and a half hours for a place to stay. 4×4 will not cut it, you need a off road vehicle or land rover for sure.
A great place to reconnect with love ones without other distraction: tv, internet, phone etc.
This place is clean, comfortable and the view is amazing. Completely submerged in nature. We got to see pacca in the morning and all the critters/reptiles at nights when they’re out hunting.
Francis who you would be corresponding with before your stay is very responsive and helpful.
We stayed 4 nights and it probably the only most significant/memorable stays out of our 7 different hotels/air bnb during our trip, even though the community is not in normal functioning/operating due to pandemic. Can’t imagine how great it would be like.
A real jungel experience!
Wonderful treehouse, with really everything you need and want!!
Fiona’s house is just a dream! We should have stayed at least three days…next time 🙂
wir habe es geliebt allein im Regenwald zu sein
Es ist ein Ort den man gesehen haben muss
Das Baumhaus war ein Traum
Our stay at Fiona’s treehouse was magical! El Fenix is such a special property for folks who are looking for a bit of adventure and seclusion. The pre check-in instructions were very detailed, and we had no trouble finding and travelling the road to base camp using G00gle Maps since we had a 4×4 car (definitely essential!), and the hike in only took 20mins or so. Matt was also super helpful before we arrived – very responsive and made sure we got in and out alright. The treehouse itself was so beautiful and well put together – had all the amenities we needed, including basics for cooking (oil, salt, sugar, coffee), the linens were very comfortable, and everything was very tidy. The mammal guides illustrated by Fiona were a great touch – we used ours during our stay at El Fenix and for the rest of our trip around Costa Rica! Would highly recommend El Fenix for couples or small groups who are confident in the outdoors and want a quiet, simple place to stay while exploring the trails!
We were not given a mosquito net as advertised, which made sleeping much more uncomfortable due to the critters in the bed room. We were also only given 1 towel to share between 2 people, which was problematic since things do not dry very well in this environment. Otherwise, everything is as advertised in the pictures/post. The house itself is awesome, especially the upper deck. Definitely a unique experience.
El Fenix is a magical treehouse in an incredibly beautiful location. The house is very comfortable and exploring the jungle was magical.
Pd: Se requiere espiritu aventurero!
A wonderful treehouse in a perfectly beautiful location. El Fénix felt so remote despite being easy to reach. Fiona and Matt were super responsive and made the whole adventure easy. The house is well equipped and comfortable, the views are superb, the privacy absolute. Can’t wait to go back!
The place is simply one of a kind. If you want nature and wilderness experience (and do not need comfort), you will be happy there.
Great experience that we don’t want to miss.
We only stayed there for 2 nights and did a little hike to the river to bathe there. The treehouse is really great, highly recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed the stay.
We really enjoyed our time at El Fénix. I wish we’d had more time to explore the area. We didn’t find the waterfalls (one of them may have been dry due to the timing of our trip at the end of the dry season). I also would have liked to see more of the treehouses to get a better feel of what the old community felt like. Our 2 night stay didn’t allow for this nor did the heavy rain that set in the afternoon of our only full day. We did have a few problems. These aren’t really complaints more of a FYI. The refrigerator never ended up working and the shower very quickly alternated between way too hot and way too cold which made showers a little difficult. I don’t know if both of these things were just a function of being off grid, but thought I’d mention them in case repairs are needed. Also, a mop onsite would be nice so we could wipe up the floors after getting rained on. Despite not seeing much wildlife it was a relaxing, incredible experience I’m thrilled I was able to experience it.
This is our second stay at El Fenix/Finca Bellavista. And 5 years later, it is still the magical place of paradise we remember. So much wildlife and plant life to be seen and heard and so peaceful. We loved falling asleep at night to the sounds of the frogs and the rest of the jungle. We also appreciate Fiona’s recommendation for a tour in Corcovado. It was amazing!
The stay at Fenix was a unique and very nice experience. The hosts are very hospitable. For the access it is necessary to have proper 4×4 drive with reductor and 4 low. We suggest arriving early enough so there is day light. The access is not easy, you have to cross a river by foot and the path is very slippery, since you walk through true jungle. The house is beautiful, clean and the view is magnificent. It is important to keep the all door closed so the moscitos dont come in. We loved it.
The treehouse is located in the middle of the jungle, fantastically located near a river.
The way there is not for the inexperienced, leads over a suspension bridge and three smaller ones, is already a challenge in the rain with a backpack, but was no surprise for us.
The house itself is ideal for two people, overlooking the jungle from a beautiful open terrace. You are wonderfully offline (no network/wifi), electricity from about 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. is not available, light with battery is available, we still had headlamps and a large lamp with us.
All in all, a little adventure for those looking for something extraordinary.
P.S. A machete as a tool is very rich, as a tree had fallen on the street and we did not pass by with our 4×4. A friendly Tico with his quad bike solved the problem with targeted strokes. Simply Pura Vida.
We had an amazing stay, the tree house was exactly as described. It was such a relaxing experience to be off grid and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We even had a Kinkajou visitor! Definitely would recommend this place.

January 10, 2021 at 7:52 amEl Fenix is a truly magical treehouse, with touches of authenticity and simplicity. What more could you ask for when staying in a jungle treehouse? I was able to charge my devices during the stay and having the entire community (basically) to myself was truly incredible. Such an awesome spot to unplug and reconnect to the world around me. Can’t wait to come back!
