Turrubares is a canton (municipality) in the southwestern part of San José province, roughly an hour or more by car from San José city. It borders Alajuela province to the north and Puntarenas province to the west and south, in the transition area between the Central Valley and the Pacific slope.
Turrubares is warm year-round with a tropical character. The rainy season (roughly May to November) brings regular afternoon rain and lush green vegetation; the dry season (December to April) is sunnier and drier. It is below the cooler cloud forest elevations of the Central Valley ridgelines.
Carara Biological Reserve — known for scarlet macaw sightings and one of Costa Rica's more accessible primary forest areas — is within a roughly hour's drive. The central Pacific coast is also within driving distance. The town of Orotina, a practical stop for supplies, is the nearest commercial hub.
