South Pacific Costa Rica is the stretch of Pacific coast anchored by Marino Ballena National Marine Park — the marine reserve named for the distinctive whale-tail sandbar at Punta Uvita, one of the most photographed landmarks in Costa Rica. The region runs from Dominical in the north through Uvita and Ojochal to the south: three distinct communities strung along the Costanera Sur highway, collectively known as the Costa Ballena.
This is one of Costa Rica's last stretches of relatively undeveloped Pacific coastline. Primary and secondary rainforest descend close to the water, humpback whales gather in the national marine park during two annual migration seasons, and the wildlife corridors leading to the Osa Peninsula begin just to the south. The Fila Costeña mountains rise steeply inland, creating microclimates that keep the region green and biodiverse year-round.
For Off Grid Destinations, South Pacific is a priority destination hub — a region defined by its combination of coastal access, intact forest ecosystems, and a growing community of sustainability-minded landowners and operators. Whether you are exploring off-grid rainforest stays, regenerative property options, or communities rooted in sustainable living, South Pacific is where those opportunities are concentrated on Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast.
Dominical anchors the northern end: a compact surf village that serves as the entry point from the highlands via the San Isidro junction. Uvita sits at the centre, closest to Marino Ballena's whale-tail beach and marine park entrance. Ojochal, the quietest of the three, is a smaller community with a notable international residential population and a reputation for creative living and quality food. Together, they form a connected corridor well-suited to those seeking a less-developed alternative to the Central Pacific. South Pacific is best for travelers who want surf, wildlife, waterfalls, beaches, and a slower off-grid Costa Rica base.

South Pacific Costa Rica refers to the coastal corridor running from Dominical in the north through Uvita and Ojochal to the south — a stretch of coast anchored by Marino Ballena National Marine Park. The region sits approximately 3–4 hours south of San José via the Costanera Sur highway (Route 34), and around 1.5 hours south of Quepos. The three main communities — Dominical, Uvita, and Ojochal — are collectively known as the Costa Ballena.
The South Pacific has two distinct seasons. The dry season (December through April) brings sunny days, calmer seas, and easier road conditions. The green season (May through November) brings heavy afternoon rains, lush vegetation, and some of the best whale watching of the year: humpback whales from the Southern Hemisphere arrive from July onwards, with August to October considered peak season for sightings at Marino Ballena.
Parque Nacional Marino Ballena protects approximately 5,375 hectares of ocean, beach, mangrove, and reef habitat along the South Pacific coast. It is named for the humpback whales (ballena means whale in Spanish) that migrate through its waters twice annually. The park is best known for Punta Uvita — a tombolo that forms a distinctive whale-tail shape when viewed from above. It is managed by SINAC, Costa Rica's National System of Conservation Areas.
South Pacific sits between the busy Central Pacific corridor (Jacó, Manuel Antonio) to the north and the wilder Osa Peninsula to the south. It offers comparable wildlife diversity to Manuel Antonio while remaining significantly less developed. Rainfall and humidity are higher than in Guanacaste, keeping the landscape dense and green year-round. It is particularly well-suited to those seeking a rainforest-and-coast combination with a quieter pace than the main tourist corridors.
